Fire Blanket

What is a fire blanket and how does it work?

A fire blanket is a safety device made of fire-resistant material that is designed to smother and extinguish small fires. It works by cutting off the oxygen supply to the flames, which helps prevent the fire from spreading further. When a fire blanket is placed over a fire, it creates a barrier between the fire and the surrounding air, effectively suffocating the flames. The fire blanket can also be used to wrap around a person's body to provide protection while escaping from a fire. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to starve the fire of oxygen, helping to quickly control and suppress the flames.

What size fire blanket should I choose for my needs?

The size of the fire blanket you should choose depends on your specific needs and the potential fire hazards you may encounter. Our fire blankets come in two sizes, ranging from "small" (39x39") suitable for home kitchens to "large" (6x6ft) for extra protection or industrial settings.
For home use, our small-sized fire blanket is usually sufficient to cover small fires effectively. This size allows for ample coverage and maneuverability to smother flames.

If you plan to use the fire blanket in a larger area or have specific requirements, it may be beneficial to opt for the large size, 6x6ft

Consider the size of the potential fire hazards in your environment, as well as the coverage area you want to achieve when selecting the appropriate size. It's always better to choose the slightly larger fire blanket to ensure adequate coverage and versatility in handling various fire situations.

Can a fire blanket be used to extinguish all types of fires?

Fire blankets are primarily designed to extinguish small, contained fires. They are effective in smothering and suppressing fires fueled by flammable liquids, such as cooking oils, or ignited by solid materials like paper, fabric, or wood. Fire blankets can also be used to extinguish small electrical fires, as long as the power source has been turned off.

However, fire blankets may not be suitable for all types of fires. They are not recommended for use on large, spreading fires or fires involving chemicals, explosives, or metals. In such cases, it is crucial to follow appropriate safety protocols and contact emergency services for professional assistance.

Fire blankets are intended as a first line of defense against small fires, providing a means to quickly smother and control the flames. It is important to understand the limitations of a fire blanket and ensure that you have proper fire safety measures in place for different fire scenarios.

Is a fire blanket reusable, or is it a one-time use item?

Whilst it is possible to reuse our fire blanket, this would totally depend upon the amount of damge it will have recieved whilst smoothering a previous fire. Therefore we recommend that once our fire blanket has been used to extinguish a fire, it should be discarded and replaced to ensure the safety and effectiveness of future fire-fighting efforts.

How do I properly store a fire blanket?

Proper storage of a fire blanket is essential to ensure its readiness and effectiveness when needed.

Here are some guidelines for storing a fire blanket:

  • Keep it easily accessible: Store the fire blanket in a location that is easily accessible and known to all household members or employees. It should be within reach and not obstructed by any obstacles.
  • Protect it from contaminants: Ensure that the fire blanket is stored in a clean environment, free from dust, dirt, or chemicals that may degrade the fabric or compromise its fire-fighting capabilities.
  • Prevent damage or tampering: Store the fire blanket in a location where it won't be subject to rough handling or accidental damage. Keep it away from sharp objects, corrosive substances, or areas with heavy foot traffic.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain: Periodically inspect the fire blanket for any signs of wear, tear, or damage. If you notice any issues, promptly replace it with a new fire blanket to ensure reliability during emergencies.

By following these storage guidelines, you can ensure that your fire blanket remains in optimal condition, ready to be deployed whenever a fire emergency arises.

Are there any safety certifications or standards that a fire blanket should meet?

Yes, there are safety certifications and standards that fire blankets should meet to ensure their reliability and effectiveness. The specific certifications and standards may vary depending on the country or region, but some common ones include:

  • ASTM F1989: This specification by the American Society for Testing and Materials covers requirements for cooking fire suppression blankets to extinguish accidental cooking fires.
  • UL 2156: This standard is issued by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and applies to fire blankets in the United States. It sets requirements for fire-resistant materials, dimensions, labeling, and performance testing.
  • EN 1869: This European standard specifies the requirements and testing methods for fire blankets. Fire blankets that meet this standard have undergone rigorous testing to ensure their flame resistance, size, durability, and other performance criteria.

When purchasing a fire blanket, it is always important to look for products that bear genuine certification marks or labels indicating compliance with recognized safety standards. These certifications provide assurance that the fire blanket has undergone testing and meets certain quality and performance criteria.

Can a fire blanket be used by anyone, or is special training required?

A fire blanket can be used by anyone, and special training is not typically required to use it effectively. Our fire blankets are designed to be user-friendly and easy to operate in emergency situations. They are especially suitable for individuals who may not have prior experience with fire extinguishers or fire-fighting techniques.

Using our fire blanket is straightforward. In case of a small fire, you can quickly retrieve the fire blanket and follow these general steps:

  1. Hold the fire blanket by the corners or grab handles, ensuring your hands are protected.
Approach the fire cautiously, taking care to keep a safe distance.
  2. Gently place the fire blanket over the flames, starting from the near edge closest to you.
  3. Avoid any direct contact with the fire and try to cover the entire burning area.
  4. Once covered, leave the fire blanket in place for a few minutes to suffocate the fire and cool down the area.

It's important to note that while fire blankets are effective for smothering small fires, they may not be suitable for larger or more dangerous fires. In such cases, it is recommended to evacuate the area and call emergency services. While training is not mandatory, it is always beneficial to familiarize yourself with the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Understanding the proper use and limitations of a fire blanket can help you respond swiftly and effectively in case of a fire emergency.

What is the expected lifespan of a fire blanket?

The expected lifespan of a fire blanket once well-maintained can last for approximately 5 to 10 years.
It's important to regularly inspect the fire blanket for any signs of tear or damage. If you notice fraying edges, burn marks, or other significant damage, it is recommended to replace the fire blanket immediately, even if it is within the expected lifespan.

Remember that a fire blanket is a critical safety device, and its effectiveness is paramount during a fire emergency. Regular inspections and proactive replacement of damaged or expired fire blankets are essential to ensure your continued safety and protection.

Can a fire blanket be used to protect people during a fire evacuation?

Yes, a fire blanket can be used to provide protection to individuals during a fire evacuation. In emergency situations where evacuation is necessary, a fire blanket can be used as a shield to protect against heat and flames while moving through smoke-filled areas or areas with intense heat.
To use a fire blanket for personal protection during evacuation, follow these steps:

1. Hold the fire blanket in front of you, covering as much of your body as possible.

2. Keep the fire blanket wrapped around your body, ensuring it covers your head, torso, and any exposed skin.

3. Move calmly and quickly towards the nearest exit, following evacuation procedures and safety instructions. The fire blanket acts as a barrier between you and the heat and flames, providing a layer of protection. It can help reduce the risk of burns and protect you from radiant heat during evacuation.

It's important to note that using a fire blanket for personal protection during evacuation is a last resort measure and should only be done when it is safe to do so. It is always recommended to follow established evacuation procedures, alert emergency services, and prioritize getting to a safe location as quickly as possible.
